Today, we played our first games of 2017 with a return to Cheslyn Hay. Warriors fielded an almost complete squad.
First Wyrley took on Brownhills Community Colts who proved to be quite a challenging team to play. This really was a ‘game of two halves’. Initially, there seemed to be little to chose between the the two sides. Warriors mounted an attack but made no progress from a corner whilst Brownhills broke away but missed the target.
The next Brownhills attack was thwarted when the Warriors’ keeper, Cole, booted the ball away but unfortunately another Brownhills player was able to make contact with the ball and score the first goal. Wyrley certainly didn’t give up at this. Isaac evaded all of the Brownhills team and made a run the full length of the pitch but was off target today. Harry set up a good ball for Jack and he came close to scoring as well.
Meanwhile, Warriors had another escape when Cole just managed to clear the ball away. However, Wyrley were soon two down when Brownhills were awarded a penalty. Harry and Isaac made much effort to regain the match and Harry was rewarded with a goal from a long ball.
The second half went much better for Warriors who soon drew level when Harry dribbled in his second goal. Hayden then passed to Harry but this time Brownhills managed to clear the ball off the line. This did not stop the ever dangerous Harry who soon broke away from the Brownhills defenders and scored his third goal of the match.
Unfortunately, Alfie could do little to stop a really powerful ball from Brownhills which levelled the score. At least Wyrley were then lucky when the ball nearly rolled into their net just before full time.
In our second match we played Norton and finished with a score line that matched our previous encounter with them. Norton took the lead soon after the start when Warriors’ marking was questionable. However, Carter made sure this did not happen twice and stopped the next attack in its’ tracks. Harry was on form again and was very unlucky not to score. Jack kept the score down with some good saves and one clearance to Harry nearly succeeded in a goal.
However, the second half gave Warriors the chance to turn the match around. Warriors were awarded a corner from which Jack nearly scored but fortunately Hayden was able to seize the opportunity before the defenders could react and brought the the score level. Despite this, Norton went into the lead again with a good goal but then Warriors were awarded a free kick. This allowed Jack to level the score again from way out. Warriors’defence really got going now with Carter putting the ball out of play and Harry, now in goal, also stopping an attack. Jack was not done yet and scored the final goal in this ding-dong battle to give Warriors the victory.
Lee commented on some ‘great passing’ which had created goals. Jack and ‘Hatrick’ Harry were awarded man of the match awards for their level of commitment today.
